Research shows that raising the bar leads to students being more motivated, more engaged, and working harder. When teachers, parents, and schools raise the bar students will deliver. But when school is too easy, i.e. when kids move from grade to grade without needing to put in much effort, students become demotivated and start to underperform. Too many students cruise through their K-12 education and even when they are struggling they are not held back. It’s only when they graduate and enter post secondary education or the workforce that they realize they don’t have the skills to survive the challenges. A high-quality education engages students, keeps them challenged and prepares them for their future and it can only be achieved through raising the bar – you may be surprised how much students care about learning, creativity and producing good work.
